Concepts of Print

1. Parent/Guardian prompt-Write the child's name and ask:  Am I writing this word right?

2.  Parent/Guardian prompt-Book concept-Front of the book-Hand the child a book, spine first, and ask:  Show me the front of the book. 

3. Parent/Guardian prompt-Book concept-Title of book-point to the title of the book.

4.  Parent/Guardian prompt-"point to the author's name".

5.  "Let's look at the pictures and use them to talk about the story.  What do you think is happening in this story? (Making meaning using context by combining picture clues and prior knowledge.

6.  Parent/Guardian prompt-" I am going to read this story to you.  Which page do I read first?" (Directionality-page sequence).

7.  Parent/Guardian prompt-"point to where I should start reading" (print carries the message, first word of a line.

8.  Parent/Guardian prompt-"Will you point to the words as I read?" (Directionality-left to right)

9. Parent/Guardian prompt-"At the end of the line, where do I go next?" (Directionality-return sweep)

10. Parent/Guardian prompt-"At the end of the page-where do I go next?" (Directionality-page sequence). 

11.  Parent/Guardian prompt-Ask the child to read the story to you and observe their behavior.  Do they focus on expressing the meaning of the story rather then reading the words.  Are they using memory of the text to match spoken with the written words.  Can they read the words?  (One-one correspondence word-by-word reading).

12.  Parent/Guardian prompt-"How many words are this page? Use your fingers to hug or frame one word.  (Concept of word)

13.  Parent/Guardian prompt-"Use my pencil to point to a space between words.  (Concept of spaces between words). 

14.   Parent/Guardian prompt-"Use my pencil and point to two words that are the same on this page.  (Print has fixed meaning). 

15.  Parent/Guardian prompt-"Can you name some of the letters on this page?" (Letter concept).

16.  Parent/Guardian prompt-"Use my pencil and point to a capital letter." (Letter concept) 

17.  Parent/Guardian prompt-"Use my pencil and point to a lower case letter." (Letter concept)

18.  Parent/Guardian prompt-"I like that story.  We don't have time to read all the words again.  Could you tell me what the story was about using your own words?"  (Retell major contents of a story from visual and printed text)
